My Winter Skincare Routine

P1040298

Wow, it’s cold at the moment! Definitely a multiple-pairs-of-socks time of year… And since there’s no way to wear multiple pairs of socks on your face (well, not while maintaining a normal social life), it’s also the time of year that I beef up my skincare routine a little bit to make sure my skin is protected from the cold. October Empties!

You’ve been a little spoiled with empties recently, what with my double whammy of September products, but luckily for you I’ve still been finishing products left, right and centre. Want to take a look?

All these photos were taken in slightly weird light, so sorry about that! A sneak peek inside my empties bag to start you off… Continue reading

Review: Nivea Daily Essentials Express Hydration Primer

P1020925

I’ve only just realised that I’ve never reviewed this little beauty for you! I hauled it, and it’s appeared in a couple of skincare posts, but I’ve not told you just how I feel it about it. While it’s not the one and only love of my life, the Express Hydration Primer is the sort of friend you’d call after a breakup, or turn up at their door at any hour for a pillow fight and girly movie… Slightly creepy anthropomorphism aside, this little gel moisturiser is a wonderful addition to anyone’s skincare regime – it’s comforting, light, and super easy to use. Shopping My Stash

Like most of you I expect, I have a habit of acquiring must-have things and then forgetting to use them. And then buying more things. And forgetting to use them. Now don’t get me wrong, I love having a good variety of colours in makeup, or flavours of lip balms and things – I’m not doing this in order to whittle my stash down to one of each item. I just want to show some long-lost products some love!

I am fairly loyal to some things and don’t tend to hoard different varieties, so I haven’t wanted to switch up my cleanser and toner, for instance, and in other cases I’m in the middle of a big bottle of something, so I’m just going to persevere (like shower gel).BEAUTY shopping my stash

Top Row:

Chilli Pepper Eyeshadow Quad – this is a cute little neutral set that was my everyday eyeshadow hero in my first year at uni. Then came Urban Decay. I really like these, I just… stopped using them!

Nivea Express Hydration Primer – I absolutely HAD to have this when it came out, and then I realised it was less of a Porefessional, post-moisturiser primer, and more of a moisturiser in its own right. But I’ve recently finished my day cream, so it’s Primer’s time to shine!

Bottom Row:

Nip and Fab Dry Leg Fix – I got this in free with a magazine this summer, so it’s not been languishing too long, but I want to use my body lotions while I can enjoy them, before it gets wintry and I feel much more body buttery.

No7 Sheer Temptation lipstick in ‘Lovely’ – This was part of a gift with purchase somewhen in the mists of time. It’s a sort of dusky pink, but very shimmery, so it’s been abandoned for a while in favour of my brights. Time to see if I can make it work or if it’s one to ditch.

Mini Ghost perfume – I really like this! I had a set of mini perfumes given to me at Christmas several years ago, and from them discovered my favourite scent, Givenchy’s Ange ou Demon – but that meant I rather neglected the other minis, which is silly when I liked them so much! As the weather darkens, the richness of Ghost should be nice.

Toffee Apple flavoured owl lip balm – surely enough said? This is amazing. I just have way too many lipbalms!

Soap and Glory Glam-a-lot – I don’t really wear body spray that much, being such a perfume girl. This is nice enough with a lovely scent, but I’ve had it for years and really would rather focus on perfume.

And of course, beauty products aren’t the only thing I stash! My To Be Read pile is enormous (although slowly shrinking, only around 160 books now), so I’m going to make an effort to nominate some lingerers to be read in the next couple of weeks to shift them onto the Read shelves!

BOOKS shopping my stash

Black Trillium by Marion Bradley, Julian May and Andre Norton – this looks like a good old-fashioned high fantasy! Not sure why this one keeps slipping down the list, I’ve had it on the pile for a few years.

The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters by G.W. Dahlquist – I’m actually reading this at the moment, and it’s very entertaining, but quite a dense, slow read. I love the blurb quote – like Sherlock Holmes, with the production values of Buffy, rewritten by the Marquis de Sade. Fun stuff.

The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde – I’ve tried to read this before and gave up – I found it a bit too patronisingly knowing and sly, but I like his other work (Shades of Grey is great), so I’m going to give it another go.

Vanished Kingdoms by Norman Davies – This has only been on the pile since Christmas, but I’m worried that if I don’t get to it soon, all my non-fiction will be abandoned once the Classics kicks in for the final year in October… A history of now-defunct places in Europe, how exciting!

Do you have the same stashing habits as I do? What do you think of this stash-shopping idea?

How The Other Half Lives

DSCF2512

Or indeed, how I live, when I’m with the other half!

I travel up to Oxford to stay with Boyfriend most weekends in the holidays, and I can be so bad at packing sometimes that I’d forget all my beauty essentials if I didn’t already have them there. So I keep a little set of products (and obviously, a hairbrush and contact lenses and all that) at his house to make my life a little easier.

By now, you should all know how much I adore Lush’s Eau Roma toner, left (not yet? See my review here!). I don’t actually have any cleanser at Boyfriend’s, and to be honest, I’m often too tired to bother with the full cleansing business in the evenings when I’m visiting in Oxford – there’s too much to do! I just spritz with this, and then moisturise.

I follow that up with Nivea Pure and Natural night cream, on the right,  which is a relatively light cream with a floral smell. It suits my skin really well, and makes sure those late nights don’t show up in the morning! In the daytime, I’ve been enjoying using the green Garnier Moisture Match day cream, in the middle – it has a really gorgeous fresh scent, feels lovely on my skin, and has a matte effect, which is great for mornings when you’re short on time, as it makes a great base for make up.

I couldn’t go a whole weekend without some form of moisturising, and I adore this REN Moroccan Rose Otto body cream, second left. I got this tiny sample in a magazine a little while ago, and fell in love with it – it has a gorgeous musky rose scent that I find really relaxing and luxurious. I wish I could afford a full-size tube of this!

Speaking of samples, that teeny tiny bottle (second right) holds the most gorgeous shower gel, Feel Good Formulas Bergamot and Ginger which I liberated from a hotel about a year ago. The scent, as well as being divine, reminds me of the brilliant trip when I picked it up, so I’m reluctant to finish it off, but you can see there’s really not much left…

Obviously I bring make up with me, but I tend to change that up each week depending on how I feel. This week I’ve got my staple Bourjois Healthy Mix foundation, Naked palette and No7 mascara, and I’ve chosen Bourjois Rose Ambre blush and Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Crush, as well as Korres Wild Rose Lip Butter, to mix things up.

Do you keep a spare set of beauty bits somewhere, like a partner’s house or at work? I’d love to see what makes the cut for you!

June Empties!

A couple of days early with this one, but I didn’t want to lug a whole bag of empty bottles back home with me. That’s just stupid. So here are my empties until the 23rd of June, and anything I finish up in the next few days will be tagged onto next month’s post!

Sorry for the quality of these photos, they were taken mid-packing at around 9pm, so they’re pretty blurry and dark and rubbish.

Quite a few things this month, as I had several nearly-empties last month, and a couple of things I was determined to finish up. Continue reading
